History of Hotel Diggi Palace

The entire history of the family of Diggi has been written in a major historical book called
"The History of The House of Diggi" by Professor K. R. Qanungo.
The Diggi Family traces their history back to 1524 AD, with the birth of Khangarji, who grew
up to have a brilliant political career during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Khangarji was the
founder of the virile sect of the Khangarwat Rajputs, men known to be fiery and impetuous,
but also endowed with great political acumen and patriotism. The Diggi branch of the
Khangarwats traces its descent through Bhakarsinghji, eighth son of Raja Khangarji.

The elegant Diggi haveli came into being when Maharajah Sawai Jai Singhji II of Jaipur, moved from the old city of Amber to his newly-built capital, Jaipur, in 1727. He invited his nobles to establish their homes in and around the fabled Pink City, so that they mightalways be within reach of the court.
Each ensuing Thakur Sahib added something to the haveli, down the generations. In 1991,
Thakur Ram Pratap Singh Diggi and his wife, Thakurani Jyotika Kumari Diggi, along with their
nephew Shakti Singh and his wife, Kaushika Kumari, converted part of their family home and
gardens into a peaceful friendly hotel, never realising what an immense success this small
project was to become.
The story of Hotel Diggi Palace actually begins with a hot air balloon. In the late '80s a
dear friend from England decided to bring over a hot air balloon, with the idea of flying
tourists over Rajasthan. It was decided that the garden area would be the probable take-off
site and an existing unused room in the garden (now no.501) and one in the courtyard (no.
108) would be done up for the pilots. The balloon, burners, the basket and a new jeep would
be housed in a hangar built on the old dhobighat (once the laundry area for the house). It
was done. Everything fell into place perfectly - except the balloon! It never took off.

Whilst patiently (but vainly) waiting for these to arrive, another couple of dear friends,
two travelling English ladies, enquired about a place to stay in comfort and security during
their time in Jaipur - et voila! Hotel Diggi Palace was born, starting with the two modest
rooms already prepared. The rest is history.
Hotel Diggi Palace has been lauded and praised, written up very well in the respected Lonely
Planet Guide, by Condé Nast publications, by Travel Associations all over the world, and
sits high on the 'must-stay-at' lists of good Internet Sites designed to help people make
informed choices. Even with 60 beautiful rooms to its credit, staying at Diggi still always
means one thing - it is a family home, and everyone who visits us is an honoured guest. We
are delighted you have joined us and hope you will return again and again.
